Older articles still describe a free kit in exchange for a 12-month commitment. Starlink’s help center now marks that plan as discontinued for new activations.

In select areas, new Starlink customers can receive discounted service pricing for a fixed period of time (e.g., 6 or 12 months) … If discounted service pricing is available in your area, you will see the discount service price offering at the time you place your order on starlink.com.

Upon activation, the Referred Subscriber will receive one free month of service on the eligible service plan of their selection, applied to their second monthly subscription invoice.

You may return an undamaged, untampered and unmodified Starlink Kit and any accessories purchased on starlink.com within 30 days of the Payment Due Date for a full refund for any reason … Should you timely return your Starlink Kit, you will also be refunded for the first month's service fee or rental fee, as applicable.
