Starlink’s August 2026 US terms: how discounts are kept or lost

Starlink republished its US Terms of Service on Aug 6, 2026. The current text explains that discounts are given at the time of sale and must be kept up. It also covers "family discount" lines, Regional Savings clawbacks and rented kits.

The short version

What changed?
Starlink's US legal list shows a new published version of the Terms of Service dated Aug 6, 2026. We read the full text on Oct 6. We didn't keep the earlier version, so we can't say which clauses are new. This post reports what the current version says about discounts.
When did it change?
Published Aug 6, 2026, per Starlink's legal list. Read by us Oct 6, 2026. The terms say Starlink emails customers a summary when it changes the agreement.
Who is affected?
Every US customer, and anyone ordering now. The discount clauses matter most to people on promotional pricing, area discounts, rented kits or extra "family discount" lines.
What should you do now?
If you get a discount, keep a record of what it depends on: address, plan, a second full-price line, or activating within a set time. Then check your invoice preview after any account change.
What stays the same?
Nothing in the discount clauses mentions a promo or coupon code. Discounts are described as offered at the time of sale. The 30-day return window for kits bought on starlink.com is still there.

What happened

Starlink’s US legal page lists every agreement with its publish date. The Terms of Service now show a version published on Aug 6, 2026. We read the whole document on Oct 6. We can’t compare it line by line with the previous version, because we didn’t save that one. So this post doesn’t claim any clause is new. It sets out what the agreement says today about discounts, which is the part that matters most to people searching for codes.

What the current terms say about discounts

Discounts are given at the time of sale. A short clause titled Discounts says Starlink “may offer you discounts at the time of sale, including on your monthly Service fee”. You have to keep your eligibility. If you don’t, Starlink may remove the discount or charge your payment method for its value.

Regional Savings can be clawed back. If your order received regional savings and you later change your service address or plan, or don’t activate your kit within 30 days of shipment, “you may be charged the original savings amount”.

“Family discount” lines. The terms say you may be offered the chance to add a limited number of extra subscriptions at a discounted kit or monthly price. To keep them, you must keep at least one full-price subscription on the same account. Cancel that one, and the discount is removed from the others straight away.

Rented kits stay Starlink’s property. If you rent a kit, it must go back undamaged within 30 days of cancelling, or you’re charged the full retail price. If you return a rented kit within the trial window, the terms say you’re refunded the Activation Price and the first month’s fee.

Demand Surcharge. An order may carry a one-time extra charge based on address, plan and kit model. It can come up again if you later change address or plan.

What it means if you’re looking for a code

Every discount in the agreement depends on something Starlink can check: where you live, which plan you’re on, whether you activated in time, or whether another full-price line exists. None of them depend on a code typed at checkout. That fits with Starlink’s promotional pricing, which appears on its own when you enter an address, and with the referral, which travels inside a link.

It also explains a common complaint. People are surprised when a discount disappears after they move or change plans. The terms say plainly that this can happen.

What you can check now

  1. Before changing your address or plan, read the Discounts and Regional Savings clauses.
  2. After any change, open Billing → Preview invoice in your account to see whether a discount is still applied.
  3. If a site tells you a “discount code” will protect your price, it’s wrong. Our myths page covers this.

What stays the same

Kits bought on starlink.com can still be returned within 30 days of the payment due date for a full refund. There’s still no promo code field. Our FAQ answers stay current.

What we don’t know yet

  • We don't know which of these clauses changed in the Aug 6 version, because we didn't save the previous text.
  • The terms link to a family-plan FAQ. We haven't seen a US invitation for family discount lines, and Starlink doesn't say where they're offered (checked 2026-10-06).
