Personal Maritime plan launches for small boats: no referral credit
The Mobile Internet Resource Center reported on Aug 28, 2026 that Starlink launched Personal Maritime, a $185-a-month plan for small recreational boats. It isn't on Starlink's referral plan list, so a referral code won't add a free month to it.
Reported, not confirmed
Change dated Published
Reported, not confirmedPart of this post rests on third-party reporting we couldn’t confirm on a Starlink page. Those parts are labelled. We re-check Starlink’s pages weekly.
The short version
- What changed?
- Per the report, Personal Maritime costs $185 a month for unlimited data in territorial (near-shore) waters worldwide, prohibits use on land, and charges $6 per GB for Ocean Mode. The terms it quotes restrict use to craft up to 40 feet.
- When did it change?
- Reported Aug 28, 2026, updated Aug 31, 2026. The report says the Ocean Mode price for Roam Unlimited moved to $6 per GB from Sept 27, 2026. We read it on Oct 6, 2026.
- Who is affected?
- Boat owners choosing between Roam and a maritime plan. Anyone ordering Residential or Roam on land isn't affected.
- What should you do now?
- If you want the referral free month, it applies only to the Residential and Roam plans on Starlink's list. Choose the plan that fits your boat first; don't pick Roam just for the credit if its rules don't fit.
- What stays the same?
- The referral plan list still names five Residential and three Roam plans. Maritime plans still aren't on it. The code still rides inside the link.
What happened
On Aug 28, 2026, the Mobile Internet Resource Center reported that Starlink had launched Personal Maritime, a plan for small recreational boats. Its report, updated Aug 31, describes:
- $185 a month for unlimited data in territorial (near-shore) waters worldwide
- no 30-day international travel limit for US accounts, except where local rules require one
- no use on land, in the plan’s own terms
- Ocean Mode (use far offshore) at $6 per GB, up from $2, and the same increase for Roam Unlimited from Sept 27, 2026
- a size limit quoted from the terms of craft up to 40 feet, which the report says hasn’t been applied consistently
Starlink may also ask for vessel details such as name, flag state, length and registration, per the report. We haven’t read the plan terms on a Starlink page, so this post is labelled Reported.
Why it’s on a code site
Because people will ask whether their referral code works on it. Starlink’s help article on using a referral link says referral credits only issue on these plans: Residential Lite, Residential, Residential 100 Mbps, Residential 200 Mbps, Residential Max, Roam 100GB, Roam 300GB and Roam Unlimited. Personal Maritime isn’t on that list, so we don’t expect an order for it to carry the referral free month.
That matters for boat owners comparing Roam Unlimited with the new plan. The referral credit is one month. The plans differ in where and how you can use them every month after that. Pick the plan whose rules fit your boat, then use a referral link if you’re ordering a plan on the list. Our existing post on business, boat and aviation plans covers the wider question.
What you can check now
- Read the plan rules on starlink.com before choosing, especially land use and offshore data.
- If you’re ordering Residential or Roam through a referral link, check the order page for the referral line before you pay. Our where to enter it guide explains how.
- Treat any “maritime promo code” as false. There’s no code box at the US checkout.
What stays the same
The referral plan list is unchanged, and the code still reaches checkout inside the link. See the glossary for the terms used here.
What we don’t know yet
- Whether the 40-foot limit quoted from the terms still applies everywhere. The report notes approvals have been inconsistent (checked 2026-10-06).
- We haven't read the Personal Maritime terms ourselves on a Starlink page, so the prices and rules here are labelled Reported.
- Whether Starlink will ever add a maritime plan to the referral list. Nothing it publishes says so.
