Demand surcharges of up to $1,500 reported; no code removes them
CNET reported on July 16, 2026 that some Starlink customers described one-time demand surcharges as high as $1,500. A surcharge is set by your address and plan. No promo or referral code removes it.
Reported, not confirmed

Reported, not confirmedPart of this post rests on third-party reporting we couldn’t confirm on a Starlink page. Those parts are labelled. We re-check Starlink’s pages weekly.
The short version
- What changed?
- CNET reported customer complaints of demand surcharges up to $1,500, and amounts in parts of the Pacific Northwest that rose from $100 to $750 to $1,000. Starlink's help article says a one-time surcharge may apply in high-demand areas, set by service address and plan.
- When did it change?
- Reported July 16, 2026. The surcharge itself was introduced in 2024, per the report. We read the report and Starlink's help article on Oct 6, 2026.
- Who is affected?
- New customers ordering in high-demand areas, and some customers moving their service address, per Starlink's help article. Most addresses see no surcharge.
- What should you do now?
- Read the order summary on starlink.com for your address before paying. If a surcharge shows, no code will remove it. Starlink says the plan you pick is one of the factors.
- What stays the same?
- There's still no code box at checkout. A referral link credits one month of service on the second bill; it doesn't cancel a surcharge or change the kit price.
What happened
On July 16, 2026, CNET reported that Starlink had become the subject of online complaints about demand surcharges as high as $1,500. The report described amounts in parts of the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho) that had risen “from $100 to $750 to $1,000”. It also quoted individual customer posts, including one person charged $1,500 after re-verifying an unchanged address, who later got a full refund, and RV owners charged $500.
Starlink’s own help article confirms the mechanism, not the amounts. It says a one-time demand surcharge may apply in locations where network demand is high, and that it’s determined by your service address and the service plan you select. CNET quoted the same page as saying surcharges can apply to new customers opening service in a high-demand area or moving to one.
Why it’s on a code site
Because a surcharge is exactly the kind of charge people hope a code will cancel. It won’t:
| You might try | What actually happens |
|---|---|
| A “promo code” from a coupon site | There’s no box to type it, so nothing changes |
| A referral link | It credits one month of service on bill 2 for a qualifying new customer; the surcharge is separate |
| Asking support for a code | Starlink publishes no code that removes a surcharge; it comes from your address and plan |
So read the order summary closely. The surcharge, if any, shows there with the plan and kit price, before you pay.
What you can check now
- Enter your real service address on starlink.com and read every line of the order summary.
- If a surcharge shows, Starlink’s article says it depends on the plan as well as the address, so compare plans before choosing.
- If you’re using a referral link, check that the referral line is also on the order summary. Our where to enter it guide shows where.
What stays the same
There’s no public US promo code, and no code reduces a demand surcharge. Our promo code answer covers what discounts do exist.
What we don’t know yet
- Which US areas carry which surcharge today. Starlink doesn't publish a list; it depends on the address (checked 2026-10-06).
- We couldn't confirm the individual $1,500 cases in the report. They come from customer posts quoted by CNET.
- Whether a surcharge shown at checkout can change between visits. Starlink's help article doesn't say.
